Arts & Crafts Terrace
Woodbridge, Suffolk

‘Freddy listened carefully to my requirements but added his own flair to create a stunning design for my garden. Friends and family have been extremely impressed by the embankment descending from my new terrace, which is amass with colour throughout the Spring and Summer.’ K Davidson
Having commissioned a contemporary extension to their period property, our clients asked us to design a terrace garden with generous space for entertaining. A planting scheme that would ensure seasonal interest and colour was also requested. Prior to our intervention, the house sat on an uneven raised lawn, separated from the main lawn by a rockery/embankment. A small terrace was situated on the site of the proposed extension.
The concept was shaped by the Arts & Crafts aesthetic. Visually stimulating spaces are unified along strong axial lines. Traditional elements, such as parterres, water features, formal steps and retaining walls have been reinterpreted in a bolder, more up to date key. The selected materials reflect this approach: both the traditional limestone and facing bricks have a contemporary finish. Levels have been simplified. This creates an elegant, user-friendly and extensive terrace: providing our clients with the flexibility of space they requested.
Water plays a significant role. A reflective lily pond and raised pool, both with raised urns, introduce sound and serenity. An elegant set of steps lead down to the main lawn and tennis court beyond. The rockery/embankment has been replaced by a graded mixed border. The planting scheme of deep pinks, purples and blues consists of traditional garden plants. These are set off by a variety of ornamental grasses. The parterre is planted with lavender and a sequence of Alliums.
