Coastal Garden

Walberswick, Suffolk

‘We were both impressed and delighted with Freddy’s design and planting schemes for our gardens. He really took the time to understand what we were looking for. The garden works incredibly well with our coastal setting in terms of angles of the sun and resilience of planting. It also complements the layout of the house and its views. The outdoor entertaining areas allow for sun, shade and being able to dodge the wind when needed. Freddy followed our brief, was frequently on site and worked very well with the team managing the build. We would highly recommend him.’ Philip and Esther Smith

Bold and geometric, linear and unfussy. Destinations and journeys. Squares and rectangles delineate socializing spaces and planting zones. Two terraces are linked by linear pathways and routes across the gravel garden. The diagonal garden axis accentuates the vista into the landscape and sea beyond.  Materials are contemporary.  Form and function are combined in the bespoke shed. The canopy of multi-stem trees over the main terrace softens its form and create dappled shade.

Planting is bold and naturalistic. It softens the lines and blends the garden into its setting.  Linear evergreen geometric forms contrasted with bold swathes of ornamental grasses and a pared-back palate of drought tolerant, low-maintenance perennials with a coastal feel.

Boundaries: sea views improved. The bulk of a cumbersome conifer hedge replaced by a simple post and rail fence and field gate for visual focus. A playfully formal walk lined with Thuja occidentalis lead to the second terrace with views across the garden and into the landscape.

A central dry garden. Gravel replaces lawn (there is an ample lawn at the front of the house) and feels more coastal. A formal quadrant of Lavender dissipates into naturalistic, mixed clumps of drought-tolerant plants.
