A Suffolk Retreat

“For children with autism, musical expression forms a life-changing means of communication. The Pro Corda garden is a fantastic resource for children with autism.” Julian Lloyd Webber
“A Suffolk Retreat” was inspired by the work of the Pro Corda Trust. Founded in 1969, Pro Corda is a Suffolk-based musical and educational charity that provides ensemble training across the UK for talented young musicians and children with special educational needs. This small, artisan garden created a secluded space where children and young people could engage with music.
Informed by the form and philosophy of Arts and Crafts gardens, A Suffolk Retreat celebrates local craftsmanship. Flint walls, Suffolk brick, and weathered oak beams are redolent of secular and ecclesiastical local building traditions.
Lime-rendered walls are decorated by specially-commissioned pargetted panels with musical and botanical themes. The planting palate of pastel yellows, creams and pale blues, punctuated by fastigiate Yews, creates a serene, but stimulating atmosphere. Local pig troughs have inspired a water tank enlivened by a blade of running water.
A Suffolk Retreat was awarded a Silver Medal.
