Small Urban Garden
Woodbridge, Suffolk

‘Frederic exceeded all my expectations. The garden is beautiful. It provides me with a real retreat from the world. There’s colour from Spring well into autumn. The spaces feels so much bigger, yet intimate.’ Caroline S
A small, formal garden with terrace, lawn and cottage garden style borders. Our client expressed a wish for a more intimate space. Privacy is often an issue in urban contexts; one that needs to be approached with a delicate hand.
Here, we introduced a stylized grove of small, ornamental trees (Prunus incisa ‘The Bride;) to soften the boundaries, creating an airy screen of canopies. These were complemented, at points requiring enhanced screening, by small evergreen trees. The existing off-the-shelf fence was clad with vertical timber boards of varying widths and painted.
Delicacy and romance were the design keywords. The beguilingly simple plan creates a framework for ornamental planting. The axial geometry of the paths, laid with clay pavers, is softened by the diagonal sight line from the terrace towards the eye-catching, bespoke ornamental gate. The cottage colour palette of blues and pinks, fading into paler tints and whites towards the rear of the garden, visually enlarges the space.
