Evergreen Italian Garden
Rome, Lazio

‘Every year the garden changes. His plant choices were perfect and everything thrives. Every year Freddy's vision matures and brings me infinite pleasure.’ Mario Fortunato
The property, a spectacular contemporary renovation overlooking the upper Tiber valley, is owned by a renowned Italian novelist. The brief was to create a low-maintenance, evergreen garden of open spaces; visually integrating the main house, study, guest cottages, and surrounding grove of Olives.
Inspired by the nearby Villa Lante, the design uses strong axes and bold blocks of clipped, Mediterranean evergreens. In addition to the play of foliage textures and forms, clusters of drought-tolerant, flowering plants add seasonal colour and character.
The project is being realised in phases. Future plans include pavilion and evergreen garden around the swimming pool garden, potager and gravel garden.
