“I'm a keen gardener, and asked Freddy to design a seamless formal layout with abundant borders. We worked closely to devise planting schemes that included my favourite plants. Though small, he has succeeded in creating for us a harmonious, but exciting group of garden rooms. The water features are amazing. ” Mrs J Browne

An Italianate Garden

The client, an enthusiastic gardener, asked for a chic Italianate courtyard garden with plenty of planting space. The formal, contemporary layout, juxtaposed with local materials reflects the renovation and expansion of the listed barn

Four interconnected garden spaces create unique atmospheres, linked through strong axial lines and focal points leading the eye into and around the garden. The Italianate structure is softened by a colourful palate of flowering trees and herbaceous perennials. Water, in the form of fountains, rills and a formal lily pond cool the sun-drenched courtyard during Summer months.

A formal water garden, inspired by van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion, with a narrow, reflective pool and a pleached all of Holm Oaks is a sociable space outside the living room. A parterre, consisting of a water pool with fountains and three Buxus edged beds enclosing three Acer Griseum creates shade and is a meeting point between indoor (conservatory) and outdoor life. Running along the retaining wall, a flowing rill delineates the boundary between this area and the courtyard, a secluded, cloistered space, laid with resin-bound gravel and planted with a large Holm Oak and three sculptural Thuja occidentalis.

The central area of the garden is dedicated to plants. Two double borders, with evergreen domes of Yew, are dedicated to seasonal displays of herbaceous perennials. The summerhouse, built in local stone with reclaimed, weathered oak beams is a focal point with sheltered seating.

This is an ongoing project.
