St James’s, Westminster, London
Soft and Sophisticated
To design a chic external space that complements this prestigious development: a Queen Anne town house overlooking St James’s Park, London. The brief required areas in which the client could entertain and a planting scheme appropriate to the dappled shade cast by two mature London Planes.
A streamlined, but soft city courtyard garden. Broad York Stone steps lead into a semi-circular paved courtyard, furnished with bespoke IOTA planters and seating. A second, gravelled space, beneath the tree canopy is punctuated by domes of Taxus baccata. Small, multi-stem ornamental trees chosen for their seasonal interest (Magnolia stellata, Camellia japonica, Acer ginnala), clusters of Viburnum opulus Roseum and Camellia sasanqua create mid-level screening.
Decisive swathes of flowering perennials in whites and greens are now spreading out to create the feeling of an elegant woodland glade in the centre of London. The space is used on a regular basis by The Resolution Foundation for entertaining.
The garden was built by Beaux Arts Landscaping, London.
Mild steel edging supplied by Harrod Horticultural.
