“Frederic’s creativity and expertise have taken our treasured garden a whole new level of beauty and delight. We are thrilled. Freddy offered us not only a design and scheme beyond our imagination, but also great attention to every aspect of planting and establishing the garden. We can’t wait for the next stage.” Sarah S

Contemporary Arts and Crafts

Set on the Sandlings peninsula, this extensive garden’s straightforward layout was implemented immediately following a rebuild several years ago.  Our clients asked us to suggest ways of improving the layout and planting.

The main terrace felt open, and exposed. Much of the garden was laid with a broad, uninspiring expanse of lawn bisected by a double herbaceous border, beautifully tended, but in need of review and enrichment.

A contemporary interpretation of an Arts and Crafts garden. The concept softened the terrace, enveloping it in generous borders and multi-stem trees that introduced depth and perspective. The whole space was in desperate need of vertical accents. Planting schemes were devised to create bolder, more harmonious colour themes.

Cloud-pruned Buxus, planted with clusters of Roses, Agapanthus and Bearded Iris enveloped the existing terrace. Its south-facing aspect was mitigated by three multi-stem Amelanchier canadensis, introducing dappled shade and intimacy. The garden’s central double border was extended, with the addition of lateral hedges to create a garden room. Four large, central Buxus domes drew the space together. Clusters of small flowering trees were introduced.

Future plans: an orchard/potager, a summer house, a rose garden.
